Mida was a gunner's girl, she worked across the bay
But her soul was the soul of a wanderer and she couldn't bear to stay
So she went to the men with the clipboard and she signed away her name
And they put her in a boat and so a soldier she became
Well, Mida fought and Mida killed a hundred times or more
Until she could no longer bear the wretched woe of war
And as she fled they shot her engines out of all control
And sent her off a-spinning down the throat of the black hole
And oh - all the things that are waiting quietly
To snare unwary wanderers across the writhing sea
And oh - as she tumbled into the maw below
The gravity did crush her bones
Her screams did echo all alone
And so another farer never found her way back home

A highwayman was Leonard Boule, and a villain’s soul had he
He wandered round the Quadrant seeking fattened ships to thieve
You’d never see him coming til he shot across your bow
And cried, “Stand and deliver, lubbers, look who’s laughing now!”
Well Leonard Boule did one day bite off more than he could chew
The ship it was deserted and plague-ridden through and through
Infection swept the mizzen, killed the engines from inside
Left Leonard Boule a-drifting towards the ever waiting Eye
And oh - all the things that are waiting quietly
To snare unwary wanderers across the writhing sea
And oh - as he tumbled into the maw below
The gravity did crush his bones
His screams did echo all alone
And so another farer never found his way back home
(le-vi-a-thee, le-vi-a-thay, le-vi-a-thu, le-vi-a-thorr)
Vikinger was an orphan kid, from a world of blackened skies
They stole aboard a cryo ship, for they had no wish to die
A million years in stasis to a paradise for men
But the navcomp shat the bed and brought them all back home again
Vikinger cursed, Vikinger swore as Urbworld orphans can
And overrode the navcomp with a manual hyper-plan
They sailed another million, but the target they did miss
For the stars had drifted rim-wards and they fell into the abyss
And oh - all the things that are waiting quietly
To snare unwary wanderers across the writhing sea
And oh - as they tumbled into the maw below
The gravity did crush their bones
Their screams did echo all alone
And so another farer never found their way back home
(le-vi-a-thee, le-vi-a-thay, le-vi-a-thu, le-vi-a-thorr)
Now gather round you children while I sing of Henry Toon
A pacifist and medic from a war-scarred Jovian moon
He journeyed to a rimworld when the fighting all was done
And met his true love Vincent ‘neath an unfamiliar sun
Now briefly they were happy in the cottage they had made
But Henry’s trauma lingered; savage screams from warriors’ graves
Their voices wouldn’t leave him; they wouldn’t let him flee
Til Henry found eternal peace in the singularity
And if you look you'll see them still, a-glinting in the night
Hanging at the precipice at the very edge of sight
What lies beyond that veil of black where time itself draws thin?
There's only a few souls who know and it's for them we sing:
And oh - all the things that are waiting quietly
To snare unwary wanderers across the writhing sea
And oh - as they tumble into the maw below
The gravity will crush their bones
Their screams will echo all alone
And so another farer never found their way back home

Now an experienced hand at timed songwriting challenges, Ben took on the February Album Writing Challenge on his own (well, with a little help) in 2019. This is the result. Softwire

TTBT has some of my favorite songs written by The Mechs. Iphis is my personal favorite due to its ties with Greek Mythology, but it's definitely an album I have on repeat constantly. yumeinati

This is a great adaptation of Arthuriana and a brilliant narrative album. I love how the queerness of the characters is handled as an integral part of the narrative and plot development without it being the end all be all of the characters themselves. my boy Gawain deserved better though maritarvaniti
